Why people move to St. Petersburg.

- Gulf beaches — St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island, Pass-a-Grille
- Pier District and walkable downtown waterfront

St. Petersburg holds the Guinness World Record for the most consecutive sunny days — 768 in a row between 1967 and 1969. The city's nickname, "The Sunshine City," is older than that, but the record gave it a legal leg to stand on.

Planning a St. Petersburg move.
- St. Petersburg sits on a peninsula, so bridges (Howard Frankland, Gandy, Pinellas Bayway) are everyone's lifeline. During hurricane evacuations, they close. Plan around that if you're moving during storm season.
- Downtown and waterfront condos almost all require a COI from your mover and a scheduled elevator window. Requirements mirror Miami high-rises but fees are usually lower ($150–$300 deposit typical).
- Shore Acres and other waterfront neighborhoods are flood-zone sensitive. Some homes flood in ordinary tropical storms. Check elevation certificates and flood-insurance requirements before closing.
- St. Pete's historic bungalow neighborhoods (Old Northeast, Kenwood, Historic Uptown) have narrow doorways, small staircases, and older HVAC systems. Large furniture may require disassembly — ask your mover ahead of time.
Moving in St. Petersburg: FAQ.
How much does it cost to move within St. Petersburg?
Local moves under 50 miles run $800–$2,700 for a 1–2 bedroom and $2,500–$6,200 for a 3–4 bedroom. St. Pete is slightly cheaper than Tampa proper because the market is less dense, but peninsula-specific bridge tolls and longer drive times can add $50–$150 per move depending on your origin.
Tampa or St. Petersburg — which should I move to?
St. Pete has a stronger arts scene, a more walkable downtown, closer Gulf beaches, and a more laid-back vibe. Tampa has more corporate jobs, more sports (three pro teams), and a larger airport. They're 30 minutes apart. If your work is on the Tampa side, consider Tampa or a bridge-accessible St. Pete neighborhood. If you can work from anywhere, most people prefer St. Pete.
Is St. Pete safe from hurricanes?
Not especially. Pinellas County is among the most vulnerable in Florida to storm surge — the peninsula funnels water and most of the population lives within a mile of a coastline. Review surge zone maps before buying or renting, and factor flood insurance into your monthly budget.
Are the beaches part of St. Petersburg?
Technically no — St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island, and Madeira Beach are separate municipalities. But they're 10–20 minutes from downtown St. Pete and share much of the same moving market. Moving to a beach town adds parking-permit requirements and sometimes seasonal rental restrictions.
