Moving to or from Detroit?
The birthplace of the American auto industry, the home of Motown, the center of American techno, and a downtown undergoing a genuine decade-long revival. Detroit is simultaneously old, broken, rebuilt, and unstoppable.
- 630,000 City population
- 4,300,000 Metro area
- 1701 Founded
- Southeast Michigan (Great Lakes) Region
Why people move to Detroit.
- The Big Three automakers — Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis (Chrysler) all headquartered here or in adjacent suburbs
- Motown Records — the music empire Berry Gordy built in a small Detroit house in 1959
- Downtown revival — Dan Gilbert's Rock Ventures has invested $5B+ in downtown Detroit since 2010
- Ford Michigan Central Station — the reopened 1913 station now Ford's autonomous-vehicle HQ, symbol of Detroit's comeback
- Detroit Tigers, Lions, Pistons, Red Wings — one of few cities with all four major pro sports downtown
- Coney dogs and Detroit-style pizza (square, crispy edges, cheese to the crust) — local traditions not up for debate
Detroit is the only US city where you have to drive south to reach Canada. Due to the unusual bend of the Detroit River, Windsor, Ontario sits directly south of downtown Detroit — making it the only place in the continental United States where Canada is to the south. The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel is literally an underwater south-bound border crossing.

Planning a Detroit move.
- Detroit varies dramatically block by block. Downtown, Midtown, Corktown, Indian Village, and Boston-Edison are thriving and safe. Other neighborhoods remain challenged. Research the specific address — not just the city — before committing.
- Winters are serious — lake-effect and Canadian cold fronts can drop 1–2 feet of snow overnight. December through February moves face truck-mechanical risks, icy driveways, and snow-delay reschedules. Build 2-day buffers.
- The Detroit River and Canadian border crossing (Ambassador Bridge, Detroit-Windsor Tunnel) are transportation lifelines. Moves involving cross-border items have extra paperwork; customs clearance adds time and cost.
- Detroit's historic homes (especially in Indian Village, Boston-Edison, Rosedale Park) have narrow doorways, steep staircases, and often limited driveways. Ask your mover about historic-home experience.
Moving in Detroit: FAQ.
How much does it cost to move within Detroit?
Local moves under 50 miles run $700–$2,400 for a 1–2 bedroom and $2,300–$5,400 for a 3–4 bedroom. Detroit is among the more affordable US markets for moves. Suburban moves (Dearborn, Royal Oak, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills) are similarly priced; Wayne County vs. Oakland County pricing differences are minor.
Is Detroit safe to move to?
Depends entirely on neighborhood. Downtown, Midtown, Corktown, New Center, Indian Village, and Boston-Edison have seen enormous investment and are generally safe. Other pockets remain challenged. Research by block, not by city; cross-streets matter enormously in Detroit.
Do Michigan movers need a state license?
Yes. Household-goods movers operating within Michigan must be licensed by the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC). Verify any Detroit mover's license at the MPSC public lookup before signing. Unlicensed movers are persistent in the Detroit market — always check first.
What's the 'Detroit revival' actually like?
Concentrated in specific areas. Downtown, Midtown, and Corktown have seen billions in new investment since 2013 — new apartments, restaurants, sports venues, and the Ford Michigan Central project. Outside those corridors, change has been much slower. The 'revival' is real but uneven; don't assume it extends to every Detroit neighborhood.
