Moving to or from Las Vegas?
The Strip's 4-mile run of mega-resorts gets the attention, but Summerlin's master-planned neighborhoods, Henderson's family suburbs, and the explosion of pro sports have turned Vegas into a genuine four-season relocation destination.
- 660,000 City population
- 2,300,000 Metro area
- 1905 Founded
- Mojave Desert (Clark County) Region
Why people move to Las Vegas.
- The Las Vegas Strip — 4 miles of world-famous mega-resort casinos in Paradise, NV (not technically Las Vegas)
- 24-hour economy — restaurants, bars, and casinos never close
- No state income tax — a major relocation driver, especially for California expats
- Las Vegas Raiders (NFL), Golden Knights (NHL), Aces (WNBA) — the city's explosion into major pro sports
- Hoover Dam and Lake Mead — 30 minutes from the Strip
- The busiest wedding destination in America — over 80,000 marriages per year
The famous Las Vegas Strip isn't actually in the city of Las Vegas. Virtually all the mega-resorts — Bellagio, Caesars, MGM, The Venetian, Wynn, Aria — are legally located in an unincorporated community called Paradise, Nevada. Clark County absorbs the tax revenue, not Las Vegas proper. The boundary runs along Sahara Avenue.

-
Henderson (separate city)
Southeast suburb; largely separate from Vegas proper. Family-friendly, top-rated master-planned communities like Green Valley and Anthem.
-

-
The Lakes
Established upscale West Vegas neighborhood with lake-front homes and mature landscaping.
-
Green Valley (Henderson)

Planning a Las Vegas move.
- Summer heat in Vegas is extreme — 110°F+ days run from June through early September, with pavement temperatures reaching 150°F. Movers start at 5 AM and finish before noon when possible. Heat-sensitive items (candles, electronics, medications, vinyl records) can melt or warp.
- The Strip and Downtown high-rise condos have strict COI, elevator reservation, and parking requirements similar to Miami or NYC. Fees of $250–$500 for move-in are common. Confirm requirements 2 weeks ahead.
- Vegas's 24/7 economy means entertainment-industry workers have unusual schedules. Late-night moves are possible and sometimes cheaper — movers often build a 24-hour availability model around the city's hospitality workforce.
- Nevada has no state income tax but sales tax in Clark County is 8.375% — one of the higher rates. Run the math for your specific income; the benefit varies dramatically by income level.
Moving in Las Vegas: FAQ.
How much does it cost to move within Las Vegas?
Local moves under 50 miles run $900–$2,900 for a 1–2 bedroom and $2,800–$6,500 for a 3–4 bedroom. Strip-adjacent high-rise moves add 15–25% for COI and parking logistics. Henderson and Summerlin suburb moves are typically easier logistically.
Is the no-state-income-tax really that big a deal in Vegas?
For higher earners, yes. Nevada has no personal income tax and no state inheritance tax. The tradeoff is a higher sales tax (8.375% in Clark County) and property taxes that have climbed with growth. For a $200K+ California transplant, the annual savings are substantial; for lower incomes, the net is closer to flat.
Do Vegas movers need a state license?
Yes. Nevada household-goods movers must be licensed by the Nevada Transportation Authority (NTA). Verify any Las Vegas mover's license at the NTA public lookup before signing. Unlicensed movers are persistent in the Vegas market.
Is Las Vegas actually a good place to live full-time?
Increasingly yes, outside the Strip. Henderson and Summerlin have become respected family-oriented communities with top schools and new housing. Pro sports (Raiders, Golden Knights, Aces), healthcare, and a growing tech presence make Vegas more than its tourism reputation. The dealbreaker for many is summer heat — if you can manage 3 months of 110°F, the other 9 months are genuinely pleasant.
