Dover is the fourth-oldest continuously-settled English-named community in the United States — founded in 1623, just three years after the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth. Only Jamestown (1607), Hampton (1610), and Plymouth (1620) are older. The settlement at Dover Point was originally called Hilton's Point after brothers Edward and William Hilton, who established a fishing station. The city's seal features the date 1623.
