Green River's dramatic sandstone cliffs and the Green River itself inspired some of Thomas Moran's most famous paintings in the 1870s — Moran accompanied the 1871 Hayden Geological Survey and painted the landscape that would become a defining American artistic portrait of the western frontier. His work helped inspire the 1872 establishment of Yellowstone National Park. Castle Rock, Tollgate Rock, and the other sandstone formations above the Green River are essentially unchanged today.
